Can Babies Eat Lotus Seed? How to Cook and Serve

Lotus seeds are the seeds of the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), used across Asian cooking in congee, soups, and sweet pastes. Cooked until very soft and mashed, they can be part of a baby's meals from around 6 months. Whole, they stay firm and round, so they need to be softened and mashed, not offered as pieces.

Lotus seeds are a mild, slightly sweet seed that turns tender and almost chestnut-like when simmered. They are a different plant from fox nuts (makhana), even though the two names get mixed up: true lotus seeds do not pop, they are cooked soft. For a baby, that softness is the whole point. Simmered down into congee or blended into a smooth paste, they fold easily into the kind of soft, spoonable food a new eater can manage.

Prep School: how to prepare lotus seed for baby-led weaning (BLW) and purées

🍴 Baby-led weaning

6 monthsEven cooked, a lotus seed stays firm, smooth, and round, so it is not a finger food. Simmer the dried seeds until very soft, mash or blend them into a smooth paste, and stir that into congee on a loaded spoon.
9 monthsCook until fully soft and mash well, then fold the paste into a scoopable mash. The seed is still firm at its core, so do not offer whole seeds as finger food yet.
12 months+Blend lotus seed into soups, congee, or a sweet lotus paste. Whole cooked seeds stay firm and round, so keep those for about age 4 and up.

🥄 Purées

6 monthsSimmer dried lotus seeds until very soft, then mash or blend into a smooth paste and stir it into congee or fruit. Remove the bitter green center sprout if you like.
9 monthsCook until fully soft and mash well, leaving a little more texture as your baby manages more. Whole seeds stay off the spoon.
12 months+Blend into soups, congee, or a sweet lotus paste. Whole cooked seeds stay firm and round, so keep those for about age 4 and up.

Is lotus seed safe? Choking & prep

Lotus seeds are not toxic and not a common allergen, so the thing to manage is texture. Even cooked, a whole seed stays firm, smooth, and round, which is the classic shape and firmness that can choke a young child, so keep whole seeds away from babies and toddlers and mash or puree them instead.1 Cook them until very soft, then mash. Some cooks remove the small green sprout in the center because it is bitter, though it is not harmful in food amounts. Introduce them on their own for a few days and watch for any reaction.2

Nutrition

Lotus seeds offer a good amount of plant protein for a seed, along with manganese, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus, and they are naturally low in fat and gluten-free. They make a filling, gentle base for congee. As with most plant foods, pair them with iron-rich and fatty foods to round out a baby's day.

Goes well with

Rice congee · Pumpkin · Chicken (shredded) · Red dates · Sweet potato

Storage & freezing

Dried lotus seeds keep for many months in an airtight container in a cool, dry cupboard. Once cooked, refrigerate and use within a couple of days, or freeze soft cooked seeds in small portions to blend into meals later. Reheat thoroughly and cool before serving.

Common questions

Are lotus seeds and makhana the same thing?

No. Makhana (fox nut) comes from Euryale ferox and gets popped into puffs. Lotus seeds come from the true lotus, Nelumbo nucifera, and are cooked soft rather than popped. In shops the labels are often swapped.

Do I need to remove the green bit in the middle?

It is optional. The green sprout is bitter but not harmful in food amounts. Many people remove it just for taste, especially in sweet dishes.

Can babies choke on cooked lotus seeds?

A whole cooked seed is still firm and round, which is a choking shape. Mash or puree them for babies and toddlers, and save whole seeds for older children.
