Can Babies Eat Sabudana Khichdi? Age, Prep, and Tips

Sabudana khichdi is made from tapioca pearls, usually cooked with potato and peanuts. The pearls are the thing to watch: they are round, springy, and sticky, which is a classic choking shape for babies. It can be offered if you cook the pearls until fully soft and mash them well, leave out whole peanuts, and skip the salt. It is mostly starch, so treat it as an energy food rather than a main meal.

Sabudana khichdi is a popular fasting dish made from soaked tapioca (sago) pearls tossed with potato, peanuts, and cumin. For adults the slightly chewy, springy pearls are the appeal, but that same texture is exactly what makes it risky for a baby who is still learning to chew and swallow. This does not mean it is off the table, it means preparation matters a lot: the pearls have to be cooked down until fully soft and then mashed, and the whole peanuts have to go.

Prep School: how to prepare sabudana khichdi for baby-led weaning (BLW) and purées

🍴 Baby-led weaning

6 monthsThis one has to be mashed, so hand over a preloaded spoon rather than pieces. Soak the pearls well, cook until fully translucent and very soft, then mash the whole khichdi so no springy pearls are left. Leave out peanuts and salt.
9 monthsStill mash it well. Folding in extra mashed potato makes it hold together in a scoopable mound your baby can take by hand or spoon. A little smooth peanut powder is fine if peanut is already part of their diet, but no whole peanuts.
12 months+Serve it soft and well cooked for your toddler to scoop. Keep salt low and continue to avoid whole peanuts, which stay a choking risk until about age 5, and stay within arm's reach while they eat.

🥄 Purées

Is sabudana khichdi safe? Choking & prep

Read this before serving. Cooked tapioca pearls are round, slippery, and springy, and round springy foods are a well known choking hazard for babies, so never serve firm or half cooked pearls.1 Cook them until completely translucent and soft, then mash the khichdi so there are no whole, bouncy pearls left. Whole peanuts and peanut pieces are also a choking hazard under age 5,3 so leave them out, or if you want to introduce peanut, stir in a little smooth peanut powder instead.2 Skip the salt, since babies need very little.3 Always stay within arm's reach and keep your baby sitting upright while they eat this one.

Nutrition

Sabudana is mostly starch, so it delivers quick energy but little protein, iron, or fiber. That is fine as part of a varied diet, but do not lean on it as a meal by itself. Pair it with a protein and an iron source, and add a soft vegetable, so the plate is not all carbohydrate.

Goes well with

Mashed potato · Plain yogurt · Mashed peas · Avocado · Mashed banana

Storage & freezing

Cooked khichdi keeps in the fridge for a day in an airtight container. Tapioca firms up as it cools, so reheat with a splash of water and mash again until soft before serving, checking that no pearls have gone springy.

Common questions

Are tapioca pearls a choking hazard for babies?

Yes. They are round, slippery, and springy, which is a high risk shape and texture. Only serve them cooked until fully soft and then mashed, never as firm whole pearls, and supervise closely.

Can I put peanuts in my baby's sabudana khichdi?

Not whole. Whole peanuts and pieces are a choking hazard until about age 5.3 If you want the peanut, stir in a little smooth peanut powder instead, once peanut has been introduced safely.

Is sabudana actually nutritious for babies?

It is mostly starch, so it is good for energy but low in protein and iron. Serve it alongside a protein, an iron food, and a vegetable rather than as a whole meal on its own.
