Homemade animal crackers

12 months+

Lower-sugar animal crackers you control. You decide how sweet.

Ingredients

Instructions

Heat the oven to 375°F and line a sheet with parchment. Mix 1 cup whole-wheat (or oat) flour, 1/2 tsp baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Work in 1/4 cup softened butter, 2 tbsp milk, 1 tbsp maple syrup (add more only if you want them sweeter), and 1/2 tsp vanilla until it forms a dough; add a splash more milk if it stays crumbly. Roll 1/4-inch thick between two sheets of floured parchment, cut with small animal cookie cutters, and bake 7 to 9 minutes until the edges just turn golden. Cool fully so they firm up. For a newer eater, still soften a cracker in milk or yogurt before serving, offer one at a time, and keep them seated and supervised. Contains wheat; introduce wheat on its own first if your toddler has not had it. Keep airtight for 3 to 5 days, or freeze.
