When can babies eat pumpkin?

Pumpkin is soft, mild, and easy to cook down smooth, which makes it a lovely early food much like butternut squash. Around 6 months, use a culinary pumpkin (the smaller sugar or pie kind), not a large carving pumpkin, which is watery and stringy.

How to prepare pumpkin, by age

6 monthsRoast or steam until very soft, then mash or purée smooth. For baby-led weaning, offer soft roasted wedges long enough to grip.
9 monthsSoft bite-sized pieces for the pincer grasp, or a thicker, lumpier mash.
12 months+Stirred into oatmeal, blended into soup, or baked into simple, low-sugar pancakes or muffins.

Is pumpkin safe? Choking & prep

Pumpkin is low-risk once cooked soft. Cook until it gives easily to a fork, avoid firm pieces, and serve sizes that suit your stage. Skip the big carving pumpkins for eating and choose a cooking pumpkin instead.

Pumpkin is rich in beta-carotene, which becomes vitamin A for eyes and immune health, plus vitamin C, fiber, and potassium. It is naturally sweet with no need for added sugar.
