When can babies eat chickpeas?
Chickpeas are soft when well cooked, mild in flavor, and packed with plant protein and iron, which makes them a great early food. You can offer them from around 6 months. The easiest route for many families is hummus, though it is worth knowing that classic hummus contains tahini, which is sesame, one of the big-9 allergens.

Whole chickpeas are firm and round enough to be a choking risk, so mash, smash, or blend them for babies rather than serving them whole. If you use hummus, remember it usually contains tahini (sesame), so introduce it when you would introduce that allergen, on its own the first time.

Chickpeas bring plant protein, iron, fiber, and folate, a genuinely useful combination for growing babies, especially those eating little or no meat. Serving them with a vitamin C food like tomato or orange helps the body absorb their iron.
