When can babies eat tomato?

Tomatoes bring a bright, savory tang that helps babies learn to like more than just sweet flavors. You can offer ripe tomato around 6 months. The one thing to know: tomatoes are acidic, so they sometimes leave a red patch or ring around the mouth. It looks like a reaction but is usually just skin irritation from the acid, not an allergy.

How to prepare tomato, by age

6 monthsOffer soft, ripe tomato flesh, skin and seeds removed, mashed or in strips. Cherry and grape tomatoes must be quartered lengthwise, never whole or halved.
9 monthsSmall soft pieces of skinned tomato, or blended into a simple sauce over soft pasta.
12 months+Quartered cherry tomatoes, chopped into salads, or roasted until jammy.

Is tomato safe? Choking & prep

Whole cherry and grape tomatoes are a classic choking hazard because they are round and firm-skinned, so always quarter them lengthwise for babies and toddlers. Remove tough skin and seeds for early eaters. The red ring some babies get around the mouth is usually acid irritation, but if you see spreading hives, swelling, or other symptoms, stop and check with your doctor.

Nutrition

Tomatoes deliver vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and lycopene, an antioxidant the body actually absorbs better from cooked tomatoes. Cooking with a little olive oil boosts that absorption further.

Goes well with

Pasta · Cheese · Cucumber · Chicken

Storage & freezing

Keep whole tomatoes at room temperature for best flavor and use within a few days. Refrigerate cut tomato and cooked tomato sauce, which also freezes well.

Whole cherry and grape tomatoes are, because of their round shape and firm skin. Always quarter them lengthwise for babies and young toddlers.

Are tomatoes an allergen?
