When can babies eat jackfruit?

Jackfruit is an enormous tropical fruit with two very different personalities. Ripe, it is sweet with soft, fragrant pods. Unripe and green, it is used like a savory meat substitute. Babies can try ripe jackfruit from around 6 to 9 months once it is soft, as long as you handle the big seeds and any stringy bits.

How to prepare jackfruit for baby-led weaning (BLW) and purées, by age

6 monthsUse ripe, soft pods. Remove the large hard seeds, which are a choking risk, and cut the flesh small. The flesh can be stringy, so cut it down further as needed.
9 monthsOffer small pieces of ripe pod, seeds removed. For green jackfruit, cook it until very soft and shred or cut it small, like a savory topping.
12 months+Continue removing seeds and cutting stringy flesh down. Mix ripe jackfruit into yogurt or oatmeal, or serve cooked green jackfruit in soft, small pieces.

Is jackfruit safe? Choking & prep

Ripe jackfruit hides large, hard seeds inside each pod, and those seeds are a choking risk, so remove them all and cut the flesh small. The flesh can be stringy, which is another reason to cut it down before serving. Unripe green jackfruit is firm and should be cooked until soft before it goes to your baby. As with any new food, stay close and watch while your baby eats.
