Baby feeding schedule by age (6 to 12 months)
Before we give you any numbers, the most useful thing to know is this: there is no one correct schedule. Think of the times below as a loose rhythm, not a train timetable. Every baby is different, appetites swing from day to day, and under one year milk is still the main event. The best schedule is the one that follows your baby's hunger and fullness cues.
6 to 8 months: milk leads, solids are practice
At this stage, breast milk or formula is still your baby's main nutrition, roughly 24 to 32 ounces a day, or about 4 to 6 nursing sessions. On top of that, offer about 2 to 3 small solid meals. Those meals are for practice, variety, and iron, not for calories yet. If your baby takes two bites and is done, that is a completely successful meal.
A sample day for a 7-month-old: nurse or bottle on waking, a small breakfast of iron-rich cereal or eggs an hour or so later, milk before or after the morning nap, a little lunch (mashed veg, a soft finger food), milk in the afternoon, a small dinner with the family, and a bedtime feed. Notice how milk still bookends the day and threads through it.
9 to 11 months: solids grow, milk eases off
Now you are looking at about 3 solid meals plus 1 to 2 snacks a day, while milk starts to ease off to roughly 20 to 28 ounces as solids take on more of the load. Textures get more interesting, portions creep up, and self-feeding gets messier and more fun. Milk still matters, but it is making room for real food.
12 months and up: three meals, two snacks
By the first birthday, the shape looks a lot more like the rest of the family's: about 3 meals plus 2 snacks. Milk changes too. Whole cow's milk in a cup can become the regular drink, around 16 to 24 ounces a day, with water offered at meals. Keeping milk in that range leaves room for food and iron.
A sample day for a 12-month-old: breakfast with the family (oatmeal, fruit, a bit of egg), a mid-morning snack, lunch, an afternoon snack, dinner, plus whole milk in a cup at a couple of those and water alongside. No need to time it to the minute. Same general slots each day is plenty of structure.
The one rule that beats any schedule: feed responsively
Offer food and milk on a predictable but loose rhythm, then let your baby lead on the amount. Start when you see hunger cues, stop when you see fullness cues, and try not to push those last few bites. Because milk still leads under one year, a day of eating less solid food is nothing to worry about. Trust your baby's appetite. It is usually smarter than the clock.
