When can babies eat sorghum syrup?

Sorghum syrup is a traditional Southern sweetener pressed and boiled from sorghum cane, deeper and more mineral-rich than corn syrup but still essentially a sugar. Added sugars are best kept out of a baby’s diet before age 2, so there is no rush.

⚠️ Sorghum syrup is a sugar, so added sugars are best avoided before age 2, and there is no need to add it to a baby’s food. Use mashed fruit to sweeten instead. Unlike honey, it does not carry a botulism risk, but the sugar advice still applies.

How to prepare sorghum syrup for baby-led weaning (BLW) and purées, by age

Toward age 2When you do use it, keep sorghum syrup to a small occasional amount. Before then, sweeten foods with mashed banana or fruit instead.
