When can babies eat almond butter?

Almond butter is one of the easiest ways to introduce tree nuts, another big-9 allergen that current guidance says to offer on purpose from around 6 months. The golden rule: never give a spoonful of thick nut butter, and never whole or chopped nuts. Thin the butter into other food so it is smooth and easy to swallow.

6 monthsStir a small amount of smooth almond butter into warm water, milk, yogurt, oatmeal, or purée until it is thin and lump-free.
9 monthsA thin layer smeared onto a strip of toast, or swirled through thicker mash and porridge.
12 months+Thinly spread on toast or fruit, or blended into smoothies. Keep it a thin layer, not a thick blob.

Is almond butter safe? Choking & prep

Introduce almond butter as an allergen: a small amount, on its own, on a day you can watch for a reaction, and get urgent help for any severe symptoms like swelling or trouble breathing. Just as important, always thin it, because sticky nut butter straight from the jar can block a small airway, and never offer whole or chopped nuts, which are a choking hazard until roughly age 4 to 5.
