When can babies eat green beans?

Green beans are a great early vegetable: their long shape is easy for a baby to hold, and their mild, slightly sweet flavor is easy to like. Around 6 months, steam or boil them until very soft and they become a perfect starter finger food.

How to prepare green beans, by age

6 monthsCook whole beans until very soft and bendy, so they squish easily, and serve them as long finger foods. Or purée them smooth, loosening with a little water or milk.
9 monthsChop soft beans into small pieces for the pincer grasp, or serve them mashed and lumpy.
12 months+Soft chopped beans stirred into rice, pasta, or a family stir-fry.

Is green beans safe? Choking & prep

The key is cooking them soft enough to squish between your fingers. Raw or firm-cooked green beans are a choking risk because they stay stringy and snappy. Cook until bendy, and for younger babies remove any tough strings before serving.

Nutrition

Green beans offer vitamin K for healthy blood, plus vitamin C, folate, and fiber. They are light, easy to digest, and a gentle way to widen the range of vegetables your baby accepts.

Goes well with

Potato · Chicken · Salmon · Rice

Storage & freezing

Fresh green beans keep about a week in the fridge. Cooked beans keep 3 to 4 days, and you can freeze them cooked or as a purée for quick future meals.

Frequently asked questions

When can babies eat green beans?

Around 6 months, cooked until very soft. A whole soft bean makes an easy first finger food, or you can purée them for spoon-feeding.

Are green beans a choking hazard?

They can be if undercooked, since they stay stringy and firm. Cook them until they squish easily, remove tough strings, and chop into small pieces once your baby is doing pincer grasp.

Do green beans cause gas?

Some babies get a little gassy with beans and other veg, which is normal and usually settles. Introduce them on their own so you can see how your baby does.

Can I use frozen or canned green beans?

Frozen beans are great, just cook them soft. If using canned, choose low or no salt versions and rinse them well before cooking.
