When can babies eat plum?

Around 6 months, when your baby can sit with support and is interested in food, a ripe plum is a sweet, soft option. Plums are also gently laxative, which can be a small mercy during a constipated stretch. Choose one that yields to a gentle squeeze.

How to prepare plum, by age

6 monthsRemove the pit and peel off the skin, then mash the soft flesh or offer a large peeled wedge for baby-led weaning.
9 monthsOffer small bite-sized pieces of peeled, ripe plum as the pincer grasp develops. Firmer plums can be steamed to soften.
12 months+Chopped into oatmeal or yogurt, or offered in slices with the skin on once your baby chews well.

Is plum safe? Choking & prep

Always remove the pit, which is a choking hazard. The skin can be tough, so peel it for young babies. Make sure the flesh is soft and offer age-appropriate sizes.

Frequently asked questions

When can babies eat plum?

Most babies can try plum around 6 months, once they show signs of readiness for solids.

Can plums help with constipation?

Yes. Plums (and prunes, which are dried plums) contain fiber and sorbitol that can gently loosen things up. Offer in moderation.

Do I need to peel plums?

For young babies, peel them, since the skin is tough to gum. You can leave it on once your baby is chewing well.

Can plum cause a rash?

Plums are mildly acidic and may leave a harmless red mark around the mouth. That is contact irritation, not an allergy.
