Shellfish allergy in babies

Shellfish includes shrimp, crab, and lobster (crustaceans) as well as clams and mussels (mollusks). It can be introduced in thoroughly cooked, age-appropriate forms, though many families introduce it a bit later than the first foods.

Safe ways to serve shellfish

⚠️ Cook shellfish thoroughly and chop finely to reduce choking risk. Shellfish is a separate allergen from finned fish. Introduce each on its own.

Frequently asked questions

When can babies eat shrimp?

Thoroughly cooked, finely chopped shrimp can be introduced once your baby is handling solids well. As with any allergen, offer it on its own and watch for a reaction.

How we write these: grounded in widely published pediatric guidance (the AAP, WHO, the NIAID 2017 allergen guidelines, and the LEAP study), and pending independent review by a pediatric professional. See our editorial and medical policy for how we research, source, and update these.

This is general information, not medical advice, and has not been individually reviewed for your baby. Always talk to your pediatrician about your baby's diet, introducing allergens, and any reaction. In an emergency, contact emergency services.
