Can Babies Eat Frittata? How to Cook and Serve

A frittata is beaten egg mixed with vegetables, cheese, or last night's leftovers, cooked slowly in a pan until set and usually finished in the oven. An unsalted version can start around 6 months, cut into strips a baby can hold. The one safety move is cooking it until the center is firm with no wobble and no glossy patches. Egg is one of the major allergens, and any cheese you fold in brings milk along with it.

When to introduce
6 months+
Common allergen?
Egg, plus milk if it contains cheese or cream. Check any other mix ins.
Texture
Soft and set, firm enough to slice into finger strips
Key nutrients
Protein, fat, choline, vitamin B12, some iron from the yolk

You made a frittata for yourself, the baby is staring at your plate with open contempt for her own lunch, and now you want to know whether a wedge of it is a reasonable thing to hand over. Mostly yes. Frittata is one of the friendliest first foods hiding inside an adult dinner: it is soft, it holds its shape in a strip, and it carries whatever vegetables you managed to smuggle into it. The catch is that the grown up version usually arrives with salt, salty cheese, and sometimes bacon. Pull a baby portion before any of that goes in and you are set.

Prep School: how to prepare frittata for baby-led weaning (BLW) and purées

🍴 Baby-led weaning

6 monthsMake it unsalted and cook until the center is firm with no jiggle. Cut it into strips about the length and width of an adult finger so your baby can hold one and gnaw the end. Keep mix ins soft and finely chopped: no whole peas, no chunks of raw vegetable, no cured meat.
9 monthsOnce the pincer grasp shows up, cut it into pieces around half an inch, or keep offering strips if that is what actually gets eaten. This is a good place for slightly more textured fillings like soft potato, shredded chicken, or finely chopped mushroom.
12 months+Serve wedges and let your toddler tear them apart. Cheese and herbs are fine now, salt still stays low, and anything firm or round that goes into the egg still needs chopping small before it gets baked in.

🥄 Purées

6 monthsCook the unsalted mixture until the center is firm with no jiggle, then mash a piece finely with a little breast milk, formula, or soft potato so it moves on a spoon. Keep mix ins soft and finely chopped.
9 monthsMash it lumpier, or chop the set frittata small and fold it into mashed potato or vegetables. Soft potato, shredded chicken, or finely chopped mushroom suit this stage.
12 months+Chopped frittata stirred through a soft mash, or wedges cut small for a toddler to manage. Cheese and herbs are fine now, and salt still stays low.

Is frittata safe? Choking & prep

Egg can go in from around 6 months, and there is no reason to hold it back. Current guidance is to introduce egg and the other major allergens early rather than late, in a well cooked form such as scrambled or hard boiled1. Offer that first taste on a day you are home and unhurried, and watch for hives, repeated vomiting, or swelling over the next couple of hours. The egg itself has to be cooked through: white and yolk both solid, no glossy uncooked center in the middle of the pan2. For choking, the problem is a thick square chunk a baby crams in whole, so cut a frittata into strips roughly the length and width of an adult finger at 6 months rather than serving a cube, and keep your baby sitting upright and supervised, never eating in a car seat or on the move. The other real world issue is salt. A recipe or restaurant frittata is nearly always salted and often built on parmesan, feta, or bacon, and babies' kidneys do not cope well with sodium2. Pour off a baby portion of the raw egg mixture before you salt the rest, or make the whole thing unsalted and season your own slice at the table. Also skip mold ripened soft cheeses like brie or blue unless they are thoroughly cooked into the dish2.

Nutrition

Eggs bring protein and fat, and the yolk carries choline, vitamin B12, and a modest amount of iron, which matters because iron needs climb right when solids start. The fat is useful too, since babies run on a much higher fat diet than adults do, so the yolk is the part you want in there, not just the white. Whatever you fold in comes along for the ride, which makes a frittata a genuinely easy way to get spinach, sweet potato, or roasted pepper into someone who rejects those things when they are served alone and identifiable.

Goes well with

Avocado · Sweet Potato · Roasted Red Pepper · Whole Milk Yogurt · Steamed Broccoli · Soft Toast Fingers

Storage & freezing

Cooked frittata keeps in an airtight container in the fridge for about three to four days, and it slices more cleanly cold than hot. It freezes well in portion sized squares: wrap each one, freeze them flat, then thaw overnight in the fridge. Reheat until steaming hot all the way through, then break the piece open, stir it, and let it cool to just warm before it goes anywhere near a mouth, because reheated egg holds scalding pockets in the middle long after the outside feels fine. Do not reheat the same portion twice.

Common questions

Can babies eat frittata with cheese in it?

Yes, as long as the cheese is pasteurized and you are ready for that serving to count as a milk introduction too. Mild cheeses like cheddar or mozzarella are fine in small amounts from around 6 months. Go easy on the quantity, because cheese is where most of the sodium in a frittata hides, and leave out mold ripened cheeses like brie or blue unless they are fully cooked into the dish.

Does a baby's frittata have to be fully cooked, or is a soft center okay?

Fully cooked. A wobbly, glossy center means undercooked egg, and undercooked egg carries a salmonella risk that is not worth taking with a baby. Cook it until the middle is set and does not move when you shake the pan, then check the very center of the slice before serving.

My frittata recipe already has salt in it. Can I still give some to my baby?

One small taste will not hurt anyone, but it should not become the routine. The easy fix is to beat the eggs, pour off a baby portion into a small pan or a ramekin, then salt the rest. That costs you about four seconds and saves you cooking two separate meals.
