Chicken and rice congee

9 months+

A soft, soothing East Asian rice porridge, easy to gum.

Ingredients

Good to know

No added salt (a baby's kidneys can only handle a little), no added sugar before age 2, and no honey before age 1 (it can carry a botulism risk). More on salt, sugar, and honey.

Instructions

  1. Simmer the rice in plenty of unsalted water or stock until it breaks down into a soft, thick porridge, about 30 minutes, stirring now and then.
  2. Stir in finely shredded cooked chicken and let it warm through.
  3. Loosen with more water for a younger eater, or keep it thicker for an older one.
