First guacamole

6 months+

Ripe avocado and a squeeze of lime. The mild version the guide means.

Ingredients

Good to know

Store-bought guacamole is often salty and can carry onion, garlic, and chili, which is why the homemade one is this plain.

Lime is gentle in this amount; skip it if it bothers your baby's skin around the mouth.

Press plastic wrap onto the surface to slow browning; best the same day.

No added salt (a baby's kidneys can only handle a little), no added sugar before age 2, and no honey before age 1 (it can carry a botulism risk). More on salt, sugar, and honey.

Instructions

  1. Halve a ripe avocado, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a bowl.
  2. Mash with a fork until mostly smooth, leaving a little soft texture.
  3. Stir in a small squeeze of lime.
  4. Serve as a soft spread on toast strips, or straight from a preloaded spoon.
