Rice and beans

12 months+

A soft, humble Caribbean staple, unsalted and iron-rich.

Ingredients

Good to know

Important: kidney beans must be fully cooked, never raw or undercooked, because raw or undercooked kidney beans contain a natural toxin.

Canned beans are already cooked.

No added salt (a baby's kidneys can only handle a little), no added sugar before age 2, and no honey before age 1 (it can carry a botulism risk). More on salt, sugar, and honey.

Instructions

  1. Warm well-cooked or canned (rinsed) kidney beans and lightly mash them so none is whole and firm.
  2. Stir through soft-cooked rice with a little of the bean liquid.
  3. Serve warm.
