Simple dal and rice
9 months+A soft, iron-rich South Asian staple, mild and unsalted.
Ingredients
- • 3 tbsp Split red lentils
- • 3 tbsp Rice
Good to know
No added salt (a baby's kidneys can only handle a little), no added sugar before age 2, and no honey before age 1 (it can carry a botulism risk). More on salt, sugar, and honey.
Instructions
- Rinse the split red lentils and simmer in unsalted water with a pinch of turmeric until collapsed and soft, about 20 minutes, adding water to keep it loose.
- For gentle flavor, warm it with a tiny bit of cumin cooked in a little oil, no chili.
- Serve over soft-cooked rice, mashed together to a texture your baby can manage.
