Can Babies Eat Cuttlefish? From 9 Months

Cuttlefish is a mollusk, so it counts as a shellfish, one of the big-9 allergens. Like squid, it goes rubbery in the middle-heat zone, so cook it either quick or slow, chop it small, and it works from around 9 months.

Can babies have cuttlefish? Yes, from around 9 months. It is a close cousin of squid and behaves the same way in the pan: quick heat or long gentle heat keeps it tender, while the middle ground makes it rubbery. Cuttlefish is a mollusk, so it is part of the shellfish allergen group, one of the big-9. Cook it tender, chop it small, and introduce it on its own.

Prep School: how to prepare cuttlefish for baby-led weaning (BLW) and purées

🍴 Baby-led weaning

9 monthsCook it until tender with a fast saute or a slow braise rather than a medium simmer, which leaves it chewy. Chop it very finely and stir it into soft rice, polenta, or a mild vegetable mash your baby can scoop, and skip rings and strips.
12 months+Finely chopped through a soft, low-salt stew or grain dish your toddler can pick up.
18 months+Small tender pieces in a family meal, still gently cooked and kept low-salt.

🥄 Purées

9 monthsCook it until tender with a fast saute or a slow braise, then chop it very finely and stir it into soft rice, polenta, or a mild vegetable mash for an easy spoonful.
12 months+Finely chopped through a soft, low-salt stew or grain dish, mashed to the texture your baby handles.
18 months+Small tender pieces stirred through a family meal, still gently cooked and kept low-salt.

Is cuttlefish safe? Choking & prep

Cuttlefish is chewy if it is overcooked, and chewy seafood is a choking risk for babies, so cook it until it is properly tender and chop it into tiny pieces, never rings or strips. Shellfish is a top-9 allergen, so offer it by itself the first time, earlier in the day, and watch for about two hours. Possible signs include hives, redness, swelling, or vomiting; any trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, repeated vomiting, or going pale or floppy is an emergency, call emergency services. The ink is fine to eat once cooked, but it is very messy and can be salty, so it is easiest to skip for a baby. Cook it fully and add no salt.

Goes well with

Soft rice · Peas · Tomato (cooked, low-salt)

Storage & freezing

Use fresh cuttlefish within a day, kept cold. Cooked and chopped, it keeps covered in the fridge for a day and reheats once. Raw cuttlefish freezes well; cooked freezes acceptably with some texture loss.

Common questions

Cooking cuttlefish so a baby can manage it

Cuttlefish and squid share a quirk: heat them for a short blast or a long slow braise and they stay tender, but hold them in the rubbery middle and they toughen. For a baby, aim squarely for tender, then chop small. A quick test is to cut a piece yourself; if it fights back against the knife, it needs longer (or it was cooked too long and needs to be minced very fine). Skip salty preparations and heavy sauces.

Mollusk vs. crustacean under the shellfish label

The big-9 shellfish allergen covers both mollusks, like cuttlefish, squid, clams, and mussels, and crustaceans, like shrimp, crab, and lobster. Reactions can be specific to one group, so tolerating one does not guarantee the other. Introduce cuttlefish on its own, earlier in the day, and watch for about two hours, the same as you would for any top-9 allergen.

When can babies eat cuttlefish?

From around 9 months, cooked tender and chopped very small. It is a shellfish, one of the big-9 allergens, so introduce it on its own and watch for a reaction.

Is cuttlefish the same allergen as fish?

No. Cuttlefish is a mollusk, part of the shellfish group, while salmon or cod are finned fish. They are separate allergens, and a baby can react to one and not the other.

How do I stop cuttlefish being chewy for my baby?

Cook it either quickly over high heat or slowly and gently for a long time. The in-between medium simmer is what makes it rubbery. Then chop it very small before serving.

Can babies eat cuttlefish ink?

Cooked ink is not harmful, but it is salty and extremely messy, so it is simplest to leave it out for babies and serve the plain cooked flesh.
